God loves to communicate His heart’s desire to His children. Orienting yourself to hear from God is a crucial starting point for getting into the prophetic. In Old Testament times, believers relied on specific prophets because the outpouring of the Holy Spirit hadn’t happened yet. The Holy Spirit would come upon specific individuals and the Jews relied on them for much of their communication with God/to hear from God. During the Old Testament the Law was prophetic for them because without the Holy Spirit it was not yet written on their hearts (“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.”-Hebrew 10:16). Since the outpouring of the Holy Spirit during Pentecost, He is much more accessible to us today.
The gift of prophecy is a natural extension of who God is and how He communicates/relates to us. You can receive prophetic insight from the Lord as He answers questions that you may have in prayer. Prophecy can be used as in the Old Testament to help create laws, forecast for a nation, appoint kings, for direction, and guidance, as well as to better connect with a person and understand the calling God has on their life. Much of the ways prophecy was used in the past is still in use today!
There are different types of prophesying such as forthtelling (which is declaring God’s will as the Scriptures declare them over someone’s life and circumstances) and foretelling (which can be a warning or blessing etc. that God wants someone to know about). Some prophets can be seers, which means that they see prophetic things visually in visions, dreams etc.
Prophecy in the Bible has been recorded as addressing the law, potential of individuals and nations, Messianic prophecies, prophecies regarding the Body of Christ, as well as future preparedness. At times the Holy Spirit may speak through an individual by having them speak His will through the speaking of tongues.
Prophecy is an amazing gift/tool that God’s children may use to speak God’s will into the world as well as the Joy of the Lord, for communion, salvation, healing for the heart and mind, fruitfulness, restoration etc.
The Logos Word is the Written Word of God and does not change and cannot be added to or taken away from. The Rhema Word is for believers today and must be validated in God’s Word.
God communicates through; visions, dreams, angels, trances, impressions, audible/still small voice, flashbacks, revelation, visitation, translation (of the spirit)/transportation (physical), thoughts. The Holy Spirit may also give a Word of Knowledge, Wisdom, or Discernment. Discernment is different from prophecy and would be considered part 1. Most importantly, we must ask the Holy Spirit to clarify His will about what we’re discerning about a situation/individual so as to not get into the flesh or our own limited understanding of things.

The Bible tells us to beware of false prophets, and if you are walking with God, they are often easy to spot. The prophet must have a good record, have Christ at the heart/core of their prophecy, and their prophecy must be Bible-based. If a prophet genuinely gives a wrong prophecy, they must ask for forgiveness.

Be sure to test every prophecy you receive. Sometimes prophecies don’t come to pass not because an individual is a false prophet, but because of sin, an attack of the enemy, or the individual didn’t hear from God correctly.
To receive prophetic communication from the Lord you must walk with Him and have a relationship with Him. Talk to God and minister to Him all day/every day to be open to hearing from Him. This means not just talking to Him in prayer but listening for His voice. He may not speak immediately, but if you get into His presence and continue to worship Him and talk to Him throughout the day about what is on your heart and asking Him for His guidance, He will give you insight and revelations.
When you receive revelation make sure to confirm it in His Word, seek guidance on interpreting His Word and how to apply it. If God has called you to minister and prophesy to others pray that He would reveal the way He wants you to minister to them, what their calling is and what His will for their life is. It may be that you need a revelation for your own life!

Keep track of what God says when He gives you revelation during prayer and as you listen for His voice. Keep track of how God has changed you and how He speaks to you as well.
When you step out in faith and follow what God has called us to do, miracles follow. God has called us to be co-laborers with Him in His kingdom and we are to expect the miracles of God in our lives and in this world.
If you are called to be an intercessor, it is important that you know the individual/assignment God has given you. Ask Him to reveal to you what you need to know to be able to intercede for them. It could be that you are interceding for their salvation, for God to reveal Himself to them. If they need healing, you would pray for their healing and in both cases you would want to declare healing and salvation for the individual.
If God has called you as a watchman or activated you in your spirit for a season, make sure to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading and what He is saying about who you are called to be a watchman for. Some are called to be end-times watchman, warning others about the coming rapture/tribulation.
